Fiction vs. Nonfiction Lesson Plan
This lesson to review fiction and nonfiction text with first grade students integrates both Common Core Standards and Information Literacy Standards. I began with an oral review of what makes a book fiction vs. nonfiction. After reviewing important elements of each, we read an example of fiction and discussed what made it fiction. The same was completed with a nonfiction text. For student assessment, each had both a fiction and a nonfiction text that I walked them through separately; they then identified whether the books were fiction or nonfiction. Though very basic, it is a good introduction to a basic information literacy skill and to a specific standard that first grade students will have to meet.
