School Library Public Relations Campaign
Creativity was the first requirement in outlining this particular public relations campaign, as it is at any time a library media specialist is reaching out to middle school students. There were a number of objects that had to be used in advocating for library services. Middle school students are often too cool for the library, regardless of the many ways in which the collection of resources and the librarian can assist them in their school work and personal hobbies. By incorporating Oreos, plastic flowers, flip flops, and Lego bricks, I made the theme “What Your Library Can Do for You” interesting and relevant to this group of adolescents. This plan asks students to allow the library to show them how they can “Stuff in some knowledge,” “Flip open a good book,” “Build a better future,” and “Grow into a responsible citizen.” All of these themes appeal to the independent nature and desire to take on increasing amounts of responsibility that is found in middle school students by demonstrating to them how the library can help them complete each of these particular tasks.
