Book Selection Model & Presentation
To create this model of how patrons select books, we identified the steps that elementary, middle, and high school students walk through when choosing books to read for pleasure. This is only one example of the opportunities I had to work with other library professionals throughout the SLIM program. Having the perspective of others makes it easier to confirm or adjust my own thoughts and ideas about patrons and their habits. Through our observations and interviews with individual students, we determined that the process evolves as students become more mature, less dependent on teachers, and more aware of their peers. By understanding how children and adolescents choose what to read, I can better assist them in making those particular decisions. I am also able to take their selection process into consideration when explaining and using systems of organization in my own library positions.
